Windows 10 ‘Creators Update’ Due February 2017

More details of the next major update of Windows 10 are starting to emerge. Instead of using the current ‘Redstone 2’ codename when the new system is released, Microsoft will call it the ‘Creators Update’. This name reflects the new features of the operating system, based around virtual reality and 3D graphics.

Microsoft revealed some details of their plans at a major event in late October in New York. One of the big hardware announcements was the Surface Studio – pretty much a fully fledged PC with all the hardware built into the screen, allowing you to carry it around like a tablet. Also announced was a revision to Surface Books, a hybrid tablet come laptop. And, of course, Windows 10 was not neglected.

Currently expected to arrive in February 2017, the Creators Update will focus on creating content and 3D graphics. Microsoft are even planning a 3D version of the trusty Microsoft Paint tool, as well as revisions to PowerPoint and Edge. It may seem like a gimmick at the moment but more and more technology companies are focusing on 3D and it is likely to take off in a major way in the next few years as 3D displays and cheap headsets become more popular.

Large manufacturers, such as HP, Dell, Lenovo, Asus and Acer, are bringing out their own ranges of virtual reality/3D goggles, some costing less than £100. While this might be a fringe issue for the foreseeable future, it could well become ingrained to the way we use our computers in future.
