When there is a problem with one of the hardware devices in your PC, Windows highlights the error in the Device Manager. But, if you rarely use the device – a scanner for example – you may not even know there is a problem with it. Often these problems can be fixed by using the Device Manager to install an updated driver. To check for problem devices and correct driver problems, follow these steps:
- Press [Windows Key] + [R], type DEVMGMT.MSC and click on OK.
- Look through the list of devices and find any that are highlighted with a warning icon. Double-click on the problem device, then click on the Driver tab.
- On the Driver tab, click on the Update Driver button.
- In Windows 8.1/8/7/Vista, click Search automatically for updated driver software and wait for the scan to be performed. In XP, select the Yes, this time only option and click Next followed by Next.
- If a newer driver is detected, it will be automatically installed, otherwise, click Close.
