Whenever you’re downloading a file from a website, copying a file from a flash drive, or saving an attachment from an email message, you’re faced with a decision about where to put it. The tempting choice is often to put it on the desktop. The danger is that you’ll leave it there for good. Over time, it will be joined by other files you save in the same way, and by icons for programs you install, and your desktop becomes a confusing jumble.
