Is there a Way to Permanently Fix the Folder View in Explorer?

Even if you configure all of the settings in the Folder Options window and save a custom view for each folder, you may find that Windows does not save the changes between re-boots. This problem is caused by faulty settings in the registry, which thankfully can be fixed. To do so, you need to reset the registry settings for all folders, then reapply your custom settings. If you have a 32-bit version of Windows, proceed as follows:

  1. Press [Windows] + [R] , type REGEDIT in the Run dialogue box, then click on OK.
  2. In the Registry Editor, delete the following registry subkeys, if they are available:
    • HKEY_CURRENT_ USER\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ Shell\ Bags
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\Shell\ BagMRU
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER/ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ ShellNoRoam\ Bags
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ ShellNoRoam\ BagMRU
    • HKEY_CURRENT_ USER\ Software\ Classes\ LocalSettings\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ Shell\ BagMRU
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Classes\ LocalSettings\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ Shell\ Bags
  3. Next, create the following registry sub-keys by right-clicking on the furthermost existing key, then selecting New > Key:
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Classes\ LocalSettings\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ Shell\ BagMRU
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Classes\ LocalSettings\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ Shell\ Bags
  4. Right-click on the keys created in step 3 in turn and choose New > DWORD Value. Name the new value BagMRU, then double-click on it and set the Value data field to 5000.

If you have a 64-bit version of Windows 8/7 or Vista, you need to make the following changes in addition to the ones above:

  1. Delete the following registry keys (if available):
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Classes\ Wow6432Node\ LocalSetings\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ Shell\ Bags
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\Classes\ Wow6432Node\ LocalSetings\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ Shell\ BagMRU
  2. Create the following registry sub-keys by right-clicking on the furthermost existing key, then selecting New > Key:
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Classes\ Wow6432Node\ LocalSettings// Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ Shell\ Bags
    • •HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Classes\ Wow6432Node\ LocalSettings\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ Shell\ BagMRU
  3. Right-click on the keys created in step 2 in turn and choose New > DWORD Value. Name the new value BagMRU, then double-click on it and set the Value data field to 5000.
