Windows often reacts very badly when there is a driver fault: STOP errors, inexplicable re-boots or complete freeze-ups are all common occurrences when a driver is not working. Often these problems can be cured by upgrading to the latest version of a driver, since this will fix faults in the software. Using the latest drivers will also result in more stability and better performance, and can even give you access to new hardware features.
