You know a certain file has got to be somewhere on your PC, but you just can’t find it. As the capacity of storage devices that are built in to our PCs becomes larger and their price less expensive, we are increasingly filling them up with vast collections of text, music and video. This is wonderful until we actually need to find something. This process of trawling through the files on our PC is known as desktop searching. Windows has always had some form of built-in search capability. The first part of this article will consider how this feature can be improved in Windows 2000/XP. We will also see how third party desktop search software can be used to enhance the desktop searching capabilities of all versions of Windows.
