Fix a Missing Windows 10 Updater

I wrote a few weeks ago how, if you had Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 with Service Pack 1 installed, Microsoft are offering a free update to the new Windows 10, when it is released on 29th July. You can pre-register for the update now, by clicking on the Windows 10 logo icon that should have appeared in the System Tray at the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.

This prompted a reader to write in saying that he had Windows 7 SP1 but the update registration icon wasn’t shown on his system. The update icon is installed automatically by Microsoft, via Windows Update, so if you have automatic updates activated it should have appeared by now. If not, you will need to manually install the update. To do so, open the Control Panel and go toWindows Update. If shown, click on Show available updates, then look at all of the updates listed (including the optional ones), until you find one labelled KB3035583. Note, if ‘Show available updates’ is not shown, click on Check for updates. Select and install this, then after a re-boot you should see the Windows 10 registration icon.
